The Recognition

Besides his general public recognition and the respect that African Americans around the world had gained for him, he also was recognized in other ways. He was the recipient of the Johnston Award in 1964 for contributing the most to tennis, while displaying good sportsmanship. In 1975 he was titled the Association of Tennis (ATP) player of the year and was named the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the year in 1992. These forms of recognition were on top of the respect he received from the 818-260 winning record he possessed, and the 51 titles he claimed (“Awards and Accomplishments” , 2011).
